Insert and Copy mode

LexSelect offers two modes for adding content to your Word documents: Insert mode and Copy mode. Each mode affects how text and citations are transferred into your working document and offers unique advantages depending on your workflow.

Insert mode (available only in Microsoft Word)

Insert mode allows you to directly place selected text or citations into your Word document.

Key features:

  1. Direct insertion: When you select text and use the insert buttons (available in the left menu or context menu), the content is inserted into the open Word file at the current cursor location – no need to manually copy and paste.
  2. Citation options: Insert mode includes advanced citation options. You can choose to insert:
    1. Regular text
    2. A citation as a footnote
    3. A citation as an endnote

💡 Insert mode is ideal when you're actively writing in Word and want to streamline your workflow.

 

Copy Mode (available in all versions)

Copy mode allows you to copy selected content to your clipboard so you can manually paste it wherever needed – either in Word, a browser, or any other application.

  1. Manual Pasting: After copying, you decide where and how to place the content.
  2. Available Anywhere: Works in both the Word add-in and the web app, making it flexible for various environments.

💡 Copy mode is helpful when you’re gathering information across documents or tools and want more control over formatting.

 

How to copy or insert content (both modes)

In both Insert and Copy modes, you can copy or insert content using:

  1. Left menu buttons
  2. Right-click context menu
  3. Keyboard shortcuts:

For Windows:

  1. Copy/insert text: Ctrl Alt C
  2. Copy/insert text with citation: Ctrl C
  3. Copy/insert citation only: Ctrl Shift C

For Mac:

  1. Copy/insert text: ⌘ ⌥ C
  2. Copy/insert text with citation: ⌘ C
  3. Copy/insert citation only: ⌘ ⇧ C

 

Switching between modes

You can switch between Insert mode and Copy mode at any time:

  1. Go to Settings in the left-hand menu.
  2. Select your preferred mode.
